MDF stands for Medium-Density Fiberboard, and in our assortment, you'll find various types of thin MDF sheets, all suitable for laser cutting. Thick MDF sheets (18mm) are often used in construction or for furniture making, but most laser cutters cannot cut through them. That's why you won't find them in our assortment.

Laser-Friendly MDF Sheets

Most people will be familiar with what MDF is, but a brief introduction is never wrong. MDF sheets consist of pressed and glued wood fibers. They are homogeneous, equally strong throughout, and contain no knots. In this, they differ from plywood or multiplex, which consist of different layers of wood.

MDF sheets are strong in use. But you can cut these thinner MDF sheets effortlessly with a laser cutter. These thinner laser sheets (MDF 1mm, MDF 2mm, and MDF 3mm) are very popular among our customers, but we naturally also have other thicknesses in stock.

Why are our MDF sheets so suitable for the laser cutter?

• Our sheets are thin and therefore do not have the standard thickness of 18 mm often found with other suppliers. You can cut them effortlessly with your laser. These thin MDF boards are sometimes hard to find in other stores.
• The glue used is laser-friendly interior glue, which leaves no sooty edges.
• All our MDF sheets carry the LaserGrade quality mark, giving you the guarantee that they are suitable for your laser cutter.

Different Types of MDF at Lasersheets

To help you select the best MDF sheet from our assortment, we will briefly explain all the options in our offering here.

Standard MDF is not yet finished. This means you determine how your product will ultimately look. Don't forget that MDF still needs to be protected if you want to place it outdoors. This can be done with stain, lacquer, or oil, for example.

We are also very proud of our FSC ® mix 70% certification. You'll find this on the MDF 3 mm, MDF 4 mm, MDF 6mm, and MDF 9 mm laser sheets. At Lasersheets, we find it just as important to sell socially responsible material as material that is perfect for the laser cutter.

We sell standard MDF in the following thicknesses and dimensions:

• Thicknesses: MDF 2 mm, MDF 3 mm FSC® mix 70%, MDF 4 mm FSC® mix 70%, MDF 6 mm FSC® mix 70%, and MDF 9mm FSC® mix 70%.
• Dimensions: 20 x 30 cm, 60 x 30 cm, 60 x 60 cm, 90 x 60 cm, 120 x 60 cm.

White coated MDF is a standard MDF board with a decorative top and bottom layer. You don't need to finish it further. It's an interesting material for engraving, as it exposes the wood beneath the decorative layer for a beautiful contrast. Apart from the white color, the qualities of white coated MDF are the same as standard MDF.

Ordering white MDF sheets? These are our available laser sheets:

• Thickness: 3mm.
• Dimensions: 20 x 30 cm, 60 x 30 cm, 60 x 60 cm, 90 x 60 cm, 120 x 60 cm.

Our black MDF has no decorative layer. The color is applied throughout the entire sheet, so the edges have the same color as the top and bottom. It is heavier and stronger than standard MDF and slightly more water-resistant (coating is required). Since it is already black, you don't need to finish it further.

We sell thin black MDF in the following dimensions and thicknesses:

• Thicknesses: black MDF 3mm and black MDF 6mm.
• Dimensions: 20 x 30 cm, 60 x 30 cm, 60 x 60 cm, 90 x 60 cm, 120 x 60 cm.

Lastly, you'll find Oak, Walnut and Ash in our assortment of MDF laser material. These sheets have a wood veneer top and bottom layer. It is an MDF board with 2 real wood layers, giving it a natural and warm appearance.

What do our customers use their MDF sheets for?

MDF is a strong and versatile sheet material. Therefore, you don't have to worry about the strength of our thinner MDF sheets. Generally, they are used for applications such as furniture making, interior projects, stencils, and architectural models.

The different types of MDF have different characteristics, making them more suitable for certain applications.

For example, black MDF 3mm and black MDF 6mm are more often used for furniture, signage, and enclosures. White coated MDF is also frequently applied for laser cutting jewelry or cards. MDF with oak veneer, on the other hand, is ideal for interior applications and model building.

Processing MDF sheets in the laser cutter

With Lasersheets' thin MDF sheets, you can create anything. There are various techniques to use. Choose an MDF sheet of 3mm or thinner, and it can also be used in a low-power laser cutter, such as a Glowforge or diode laser. Use the abundance of ready-made vector files available online.

Compared to our other laser materials, MDF is one of the most laser-friendly choices. The most important thing is that they are not too thick, and that's where Lasersheets is the right place for you. It is homogeneous, contains no knots or natural variations in strength. Your laser will effortlessly cut through our thin MDF boards.

How can you process our MDF sheets? These are just a few examples.

• Use our white coated MDF sheets and engrave a photo, logo, or sketch into them. The contrast between wood and white is magnificent.
• A halftone image also yields unique results.
• Beginning laser users can download a free vector file to make a box, lampshade, or corporate gift.
• Is model building your specialty? Then use our veneered MDF and laser cut all your parts separately with the laser printer. Veneered MDF has a natural and warm appearance.
• You can beautifully finish our standard MDF laser sheets yourself. This way, you create a unique product display or beautiful sign. Don't forget to coat, lacquer, or stain it if you want to use it outdoors.

Ordering MDF sheets, our tips

To conclude and summarize some important points when ordering an MDF sheet from us.

1. Thinner is better

MDF is strong, which means it can also be supplied in thinner dimensions. However, this also makes it somewhat harder to laser cut. We are one of the few suppliers that also offer thin MDF sheets, ideal for low-power laser cutters. Our thinnest sheets are MDF 3mm, MDF 2mm, and MDF 1mm. In addition, we also have thicker sheets, such as black MDF 6mm, MDF with oak veneer 4mm, and standard MDF 9mm.

Avoid MDF sheets thicker than 9mm. You won't be doing your laser cutter or your end result any favors with those.

2. Pay attention to the glue used

If you don't buy your MDF sheet material from Lasersheets, there's a chance that exterior glue has been used. This is also known as WBP glue. This glue is not compatible with laser cutting machines and will yield messy results.

Our laser sheets carry the LaserGrade quality mark, so you don't have to worry about any of these problems or situations.

3. Through-colored or just a top layer

Our black MDF of 3mm and 6mm is through-colored. Our white MDF and double-sided veneered MDF only have a colored top layer. This strongly influences the result. If you engrave a photo into a black MDF sheet, you will see less contrast. If you do that into a white MDF sheet, this top layer will be removed during engraving.

Neither option needs to be finished, but at the edges of veneered and white MDF, the wood will be clearly visible, and with black MDF, it will be the same color throughout.
