Properties
Basswood Plywood is made up of cross-bonded layers, which provides strength and stability in all directions. This makes it less prone to breakage than solid wood. Linden Plywood has a midrib direction in which thin sheets up to 3 mm stiffer. The internal layers contain few knots, which contributes to the beautiful appearance of the sheets. Linden wood is naturally light in color, with a subtle and even grain structure.
Applications
Basswood Plywood (or linden Plywood) is used for many different applications, including decorative objects, furniture, and art projects. Thanks to its light weight and flat sheets it is ideal for precision work such as model making and musical instruments. The beautiful, almost knot-free layers also make it suitable for decorative panels and interior finishes. For outdoor use, the material must be finished to provide protection against weather influences.

MDF
Characteristics
MDF is a pressed and glued wood fiber board. It is relatively heavy but also stiff and strong. It is homogeneous, meaning the material is equally strong in all directions and places, and has low thickness tolerances, meaning the thickness varies only slightly.
Applications
Due to its low cost and strength, MDF is ideal for all kinds of projects and prototypes. It is the most obvious choice for objects that are still finished or painted after laser cutting, or where finishing is not necessary. MDF is also a suitable material for technical applications such as 3D printer bodies. Some examples of applications:
- form studies
- furniture
- 3D sculptures
- models
- mechanical constructions
- section models

Birch plywood
A commonly used and versatile type of wood. It’s hard, strong, and has a distinct wood grain look.
Properties
Birch plywood has been the most popular wood in our range for years. It’s strong, hard, and has a distinct wood grain. Birch is ideal for laser cutting. We offer two variants: European and Asian birch plywood. Both are glued with a special adhesive that’s suitable for laser cutting. They are B/B grade and contain very few internal knots. European birch is strong; Asian birch is slightly more brittle but more affordable. Birch is light in color with visible, yet subtle grain patterns. As it’s a natural material, appearance may vary slightly from sheet to sheet.
Laser-compatible adhesive
The adhesive used in this plywood makes it ideal for laser cutting. It produces less soot than regular plywood during cutting. With optimal settings, the cut edge of our birch plywood is honey-brown and doesn't leave residue.
Strong sheets
Due to crosswise lamination, this plywood is stronger than solid wood. One direction is always stronger – in this case, the lengthwise direction. European birch is our strongest wood type, while Asian birch is more prone to breaking.
Asian birch plywood has less internal stress, meaning it warps less easily. These sheets are generally flatter than European birch plywood.
High quality
Birch plywood has a B/B visual grade, meaning no visible knots and minimal repairs on the outer layers. This makes it ideal for visible applications where both front and back need to look clean. The inner layers are also high quality with few knots – very important for laser cutters, as knots often don’t cut through cleanly and can cause burn marks.
FSC
3 mm and 6 mm European birch plywood come from sustainably managed forests in Europe and are FSC Mix Credit certified – a responsible and eco-friendly choice.
European or Asian birch?
Not sure whether to choose European or Asian birch for laser cutting? Both are glued for laser use and have a B/B visual grade – so both are high quality.
The differences lie in strength, flatness, and price: European birch is stronger. Asian birch warps less and is more affordable. Only European birch (3 mm & 6 mm) is FSC-certified.
- Need strong wood? Choose European birch.
- Need flat sheets? Choose Asian birch.
- Looking for a budget-friendly option? Choose Asian birch.
- Looking for FSC-certified wood? Choose European birch.
Applications
Birch plywood is a versatile wood type widely used by laser cutters. It has been our bestseller for years, and people make all kinds of things with it, such as:
- Interior & decoration: wall art, lamps, furniture parts, home accessories
- Design & branding: wall letters, logos, signage, personalized items
- Model building & construction: kits, airplanes, boats, architectural models
- Small objects & gifts: keychains, name tags, coasters, personalized gifts
- Graphic uses: birth announcements, invitations, decorative prints
- Engraving & personalization: photo engravings, memorial items, custom signage
- Tech & DIY projects: 3D printer enclosures, electronics projects, prototypes
LaserGrade
Suitable for both diode and CO₂ laser machines. Birch plywood is LaserGrade, meaning it’s perfectly suited for cutting with both types. The thickness you can cut depends on your machine’s wattage.
Looking for a beautiful, natural wood type that’s perfect for laser cutting?
Birch plywood is by far our most popular material for a reason – versatile, reliable, and loved by our customers.

Laser materials for schools and makers' spaces
Laser cutting, just like 3D printing and milling, makes many students, makers and teachers enthusiastic. The detail you can make and the multitude of materials you can use inspire and motivate.
But laser cutting can also be frustrating. A laser cutter is not as fool-proof as an office printer. And the sheet materials that you encounter in the hardware store or that users come up with themselves do not always appear to be easy to laser cut. Sometimes that means a lot of smoke, bad smells and black edges, and sometimes the disappointment of failed cutting sessions. It is also important to keep an eye on safety; many plastics contain toxic substances that are harmful to people and machines.
In short; using the right materials is very important. We have 12 years of experience with laser cutting of wood and plastic and are here to help you.
With a wide range of materials that are guaranteed to be good and safe to laser, you buy security and convenience. This way you can be sure that you maintain the enthusiasm of all laser masters (to be) and let them get the most out of the technology!
