PETG (Polyester)
In short:
- Crystal clear, strong, and flexible
- Bends without breaking
- Suitable for machine guards and models
- Excellent for laser cutting
- Heat sensitive: small details can melt
- Prone to scratching
Description
A flexible, affordable plastic that's tough.
Properties
Polyester can be bent into sharp corners without breaking, much like metals. Its transparency is good, but optically, it’s not as perfect as Acrylic. The laser cut has a melt edge of about 0.1 mm, so it's best for larger shapes. Polyester is relatively soft, so you can trim it with a utility knife.
Applications
Because you can fold it, polyester works well for origami-style applications and prototyping folding parts. Thin polyester (0.8 and 0.5mm) is also perfect for making paint stencils. It doesn't absorb paint, is easy to clean, and is transparent too. For model making, it's also used as a cheaper alternative to Acrylic, though for detailed work, Acrylic is superior.
